Soga Plum Orchard 曽我の梅林

Soga Plum Orchard lies in Soga,northeast of Odawara,Kanagawa Pre.
The orchard contains about 30,000 plum trees.
In the Warring States period(16C),Hojo clan who reigned Odawara began to plant plum trees for military provision.
Later in the Edo Period(17C~19C),Okubo clan encouraged to plant plum trees.
Then Umeboshi(pickled plums) was made and they were useful for travelers who went over Hokone.Now Umeboshi is one of specialities of Odawara.
The plum blossoms are fully out in early February, the Plum Festival has been held every year.
曽我の梅林は小田原の北西部に広がっており、約3万本の梅の木が植えられています。
戦国時代に小田原を治めた北条氏が兵糧として梅の栽培を始め、後の江戸時代に大久保氏が梅の栽培を奨励しました。梅から作った梅干は箱根越えをする旅人たちにとても役立ったそうです。梅干は現在小田原の特産品の一つとなっています。
梅の花は例年2月上旬に満開となり、梅祭りが毎年行われます。

Horseback Archery 流鏑馬
In the 12th Century, Soga Sukenobu,Minamoto-no-yoritomo's subject who lived Soga was a master at Horseback Archery. Therefore Horseback Archery for peace and prosperity has been performed in Soga every year.
12世紀に曽我に住んでいた源頼朝の臣下曽我祐信が流鏑馬の達人であったことにちなんで、天下泰平と五穀豊穣を祈願した流鏑馬が曽我で毎年行われています。

Kanrobai,special sweet of Odawara
It looks like a plum wrapped in a Red Shiso leaf, but is a rice cake stuffed with sweet bean paste. There are many kinds of Kanrobai in Japan. The original one was well known sweet of Yoshiwara in Edo(present Tokyo).
小田原の名物和菓子「甘露梅」。紫蘇に包まれた中身は梅ではなく餡です。日本には多くの種類の「甘露梅」があり、オリジナルは江戸の吉原の名物和菓子でした。
